Despite the tremendous interest in Malbec, the idea of making a wine in Argentina came about by pure chance.
Several months prior to the 2007 harvest, José Miguel Viu decided to make good on an invitation and extended it to the Viu Manent technical team. They traveled overland from Colchagua to Mendoza and crossed the impressive Andes Mountains to taste Argentina’s finest Malbecs, visit their wineries, and meet the people behind the wines.
After a week of visiting vineyards and wineries in every corner of Mendoza, the idea of making a wine in Argentina was going around in José Miguel’s head, and the enthusiasm of the entire team was evident. On a second trip, Viña Viu Manent firmed up the possibility of vinifying small lots of grapes selected in the Uco Valley, the area in southern Mendoza that had attracted the team’s attention for its quality and style of its wines.
Enthusiasm, along with fate and the help of some good friends has led Viña Viu Manent to the other side of the Andes to continue along the path to making the best Malbecs in the world.
